![]() Tulsa Enterprises was originally formed to supply specialty lubricants to the commercial and industrial market back in 1990. Little did we know at the time that our love for motorcycles would take us to where we are today. Being avid motorcyclists with a love for the comfort and reliability of the Honda Gold Wing we started looking at the Gold Wing market in 1994. Based on our own years of personal experience, we felt there was a need for some new ideas in products that were not only designed and developed specifically for the Gold Wing, but designed with function and quality as the first priorities. It was about that time that a product line that had a very good reputation in the industry became available and was purchased and used as the foundation for Tulsa Enterprises as it is known today. Our first project for a new product was the Tulsa Enterprises Aerodynamic Windshield for the GL 1500. Our primary reason for making the windshield our first project was based on our experience with the stock and other after market windshields. While they were all fine products, they did not provide the kind of protection, especially for the passenger, that we felt was very badly needed based on our having spent several years on GL 1100s and GL 1200s. It was when, in 1988, we got our first GL 1500, that Phyllis complained about how much buffeting she had around her head and shoulders. The rest, as they say, is history. During the years between 1988 and 1994 we experimented with ways to make the passenger more comfortable. After a good deal of research, we felt the answer was in the windshield, and tried a variety of after market windshields with little satisfaction or success. In 1994 we came across a one-of-a-kind, hand made windshield that appeared to be very close to what we were looking for. After trying it out and discussing the possibilities of manufacturing this design, we decided that Tulsa Enterprises would continue the development and manufacture this style windshield for the Gold Wing. After months of searching, we found a design engineer to assist us and a molding company, which had over 20 years experience molding motorcycle windshields, to handle manufacturing. Drawing from the design engineer's experience and smoke tunnel testing on other projects we started testing prototypes. The testing on the new windshield design had to be real world if we were going to convince the riding public that we really had improved over the stock windshield. So, we decided to do this testing on the freeways of Southern California. After countless hours and a substantial cash investment, it was time to see what the Gold Wing riders thought of our product. We provided a few Gold Wing riders with prototypes of the new windshield, and ask them to evaluate the windshield under their normal riding conditions and to please give us their honest opinions and suggestions. Based on their feedback, we made a few changes to the original design and then we made a small production run in January 1995. Then based on the feedback from our customers we made a couple of additional changes and then we started full production on the Tulsa Aerodynamic Windshield. At that same time, we started working on other projects including the Aerodynamic Wind Wings (same design engineer), Stainless Steel Driving Lights, and other popular items. In January 1996, Tulsa Enterprises was purchased from Roger McFarland. I'd like to state publicly, here and now, that without Roger's help there would probably not be a Tulsa Enterprises today. The only thing that changed with the purchase, was the name of the owner. Allen Smith had pretty much been running the business on a daily basis, and with Phyllis's help and experience as a passenger, had done most of the development and testing on the windshield and wind wings. Roger's input, based on his years of motorcycling experience and Billy Smith's motorcycle knowledge and fabrication expertise were invaluable. Without them, the success of Tulsa Enterprises would still be a dream.
In September of 1997, Tulsa Enterprises moved from the Left Coast to Lexington, TN. so that we could be more centrally located to better serve our customers and dealers. Plus, this location gets us a lot closer to many of the major rallies that we support and attend as vendors.
